CV vs Resume: Which One the Job Actually Wants

A resume is a 1-2 page summary tailored to one job; a CV (curriculum vitae) is a longer, complete record of academic and professional history. In India, most companies use the two words interchangeably and expect a resume-style document unless the role is academic or research.

Side by side

The differences that matter when you apply.

Use this to decide what to send. The deciding factor is the type of job and the country, not the word used in the job post.

CV vs resume comparison

Rule of thumb: corporate job = resume, academic or research job = CV

Length: Resume 1 page for freshers and 2 pages for experienced candidates. CV 2 pages minimum and grows with your career; 5-10 pages is normal for senior academics.

Purpose: A resume markets you for one specific job. A CV documents your full academic and professional record.

Tailoring: A resume changes for every application. A CV stays largely the same, with new entries added over time.

Content: Resumes focus on skills, experience and achievements. CVs add publications, research, conferences, teaching, grants and academic awards.

Where used: Resumes for private-sector jobs in India, the US and Canada. CVs for academia and research worldwide, and as the general word for a job application document in the UK, Europe, the Gulf and much of Asia.

India specifically: Recruiters say 'CV' and 'resume' interchangeably. For corporate roles, send a 1-2 page resume even if the post says CV. For university, PhD or research roles, send a full academic CV.

How to choose

Built for scanners, humans and hiring intent.

  • Read the job type, not the label

A corporate job asking for a 'CV' usually wants a resume. An academic job asking for a resume usually wants a CV.

  • Length is the quickest tell

If you have to fit it on one or two pages, it is a resume. If it lists every publication, it is a CV.

  • Academic roles need a CV

Lecturer, PhD, postdoc, research fellow and grant applications expect a full CV with publications.

  • Both must be ATS-readable

Whichever you send online, keep the layout simple so applicant tracking systems can read it.

  • US and Canada: resume for jobs, CV only for academia
  • UK and Ireland: 'CV' means a 2-page resume-style document
  • Gulf (UAE, Saudi, Qatar): 'CV' is common; 2-3 pages, often with nationality and visa status
  • Germany and Europe: 'Lebenslauf' or Europass CV, usually 2 pages

Actionable tips

Small edits that lift response rates.

Run through these before every application.

  1. 1Follow the employer's words for the file nameIf they ask for a CV, name the file Name_CV.pdf even if it is resume-length. Match their language.
  2. 2Keep a master CVMaintain one long document with everything, then cut it down into a tailored resume for each job.
  3. 3Do not pad a resume into a CVAdding school marks, hobbies and long objectives does not turn a resume into a CV; it just makes it weaker.
  4. 4Check country rulesGulf and some Asian employers expect personal details like nationality; the US and UK do not.
  5. 5Build both from one profileCreate your resume in BrainUp, then reuse the same content when you need a longer academic CV.

FAQ

Common questions, direct answers.

What is the difference between a CV and a resume?

A resume is a short 1-2 page document tailored to a specific job. A CV is a longer, complete record of your academic and professional history, used mainly for academic and research roles.

Are CV and resume the same in India?

In everyday hiring, yes. Indian recruiters use both words for the same 1-2 page document. Only academic and research roles expect a long, detailed CV.

Should I send a CV or a resume for a job?

Send a resume for corporate and private-sector jobs, even if the post says CV. Send a full CV for teaching, research, PhD and grant applications.

How long should a CV be?

An academic CV has no fixed limit and is often 3-10 pages. In the UK and Gulf, a job-application CV is usually 2 pages.

Can I use my CV as a resume?

Only after cutting it down. Remove publications and details unrelated to the job, keep 1-2 pages, and tailor the summary and skills to the role.

Which is better for freshers, CV or resume?

Freshers should use a one-page resume for most jobs. A CV is only needed for research positions or higher studies applications.
