Manual Testing Interview Questions: Think Like a Tester

Manual testing interviews check your grasp of SDLC and STLC, test case writing, test design techniques like boundary value analysis, the bug life cycle, severity vs priority, and types of testing. Expect to write test cases for a login page or similar feature on the spot.

Sample answers

Use examples from a real screen.

Testers stand out by applying concepts to a concrete feature instead of reciting definitions.

Model answers for 4 manual testing questions

Typical round: concepts, test cases on the spot, a bug scenario

Q: What is the difference between severity and priority? A: Severity is how badly a bug affects the system; priority is how soon it must be fixed. A spelling mistake in the company name on the home page is low severity but high priority; a crash in a rarely used admin report can be high severity but lower priority.

Q: Write test cases for a login page. A: Valid login; wrong password; unregistered email; empty fields; password field masking; error message wording; account lock after repeated failures; 'remember me'; forgot-password link; session behaviour after logout and browser back button; SQL injection and long-input handling.

Q: Explain boundary value analysis. A: Test at and around the edges of valid ranges, where bugs cluster. For an age field accepting 18 to 60, test 17, 18, 19, 59, 60 and 61.

Q: What is regression testing? A: Re-testing existing features after a change to make sure nothing that used to work is broken. It is usually prioritised by risk and is a prime candidate for automation.

What interviewers check

Built for scanners, humans and hiring intent.

  • Bug thinking

Clear bug reports, severity judgment and the bug life cycle are the basics of every QA round.

  • Test design techniques

Equivalence partitioning, boundary values and decision tables show structured coverage.

  • Test documentation

Test plans, test cases and traceability show you can work in a real QA process.

  • Process knowledge

SDLC, STLC and Agile ceremonies tell interviewers where testing fits in delivery.

Examples

Copy the structure, not the wording.

These examples show shape and specificity. Add your own facts, metrics, tools and outcomes.

Concepts

  • What is software testing?
  • Verification vs validation?
  • What is STLC?
  • Smoke vs sanity testing?
  • Functional vs non-functional testing?

Test design

  • Explain equivalence partitioning.
  • Explain boundary value analysis.
  • What is a decision table?
  • What is exploratory testing?
  • What goes into a good test case?

On-the-spot tasks

  • Write test cases for a login page.
  • Write test cases for a pen or an ATM.
  • Log a bug for a broken payment page.
  • Decide what to test with only one hour left.
  • A developer says 'it works on my machine'. What do you do?

Actionable tips

Small edits that lift response rates.

Run through these before every application.

  1. 1Practise writing test cases fastLogin, search, cart and forms come up often. Cover positive, negative and edge cases.
  2. 2Know severity vs priority examplesHave one example for each combination ready; it's asked in almost every QA interview.
  3. 3Write a sample bug reportTitle, steps, expected vs actual, environment, severity and evidence. Clear bugs get fixed faster.
  4. 4Mention toolsJira, TestRail, Postman and basic SQL show you can work in a real QA team.

FAQ

Common questions, direct answers.

What is manual testing?

Manual testing is checking software by hand, without automation scripts, to find defects and confirm it behaves as expected for users.

What is the difference between verification and validation?

Verification checks that the product is built correctly against specifications, often through reviews. Validation checks that the right product is built for user needs, through testing.

What is STLC?

The Software Testing Life Cycle: requirement analysis, test planning, test case design, environment setup, test execution and test closure.

What is the bug life cycle?

The stages a defect moves through, typically New, Assigned, Open, Fixed, Retest, Verified and Closed, with Reopened, Deferred or Rejected as alternatives.

What is the difference between severity and priority?

Severity measures a bug's impact on the system. Priority measures how urgently it should be fixed, often based on business need.

What is smoke testing?

A quick check of critical features on a new build to decide whether it is stable enough for detailed testing.

What is sanity testing?

A narrow check of a specific fix or feature after a change to confirm it works before broader testing.

What is regression testing?

Re-testing existing functionality after changes to make sure nothing previously working is broken.

What is boundary value analysis?

A test design technique that focuses on values at and just around the edges of valid input ranges, where defects are most likely.

What is equivalence partitioning?

Dividing inputs into groups that should behave the same, then testing one value from each group to reduce the number of test cases.

What is a test case?

A documented set of preconditions, steps, test data and expected results used to verify a specific behaviour.

What is exploratory testing?

Simultaneous learning, test design and execution without predefined scripts, guided by the tester's experience and curiosity.

What is the difference between functional and non-functional testing?

Functional testing checks what the system does against requirements. Non-functional testing checks how it performs, such as speed, security and usability.

What is UAT?

User acceptance testing is done by end users or clients to confirm the software meets business needs before release.

Can freshers get manual testing jobs?

Yes. Many companies hire freshers for QA roles if they know testing concepts, can write clear test cases and bug reports, and know basics of SQL and an API tool.

How should I prepare for a manual testing interview?

Revise STLC, bug life cycle and test design techniques, practise writing test cases for common features, and prepare a sample bug report and a project example.
