Node.js Interview Questions: Event Loop, Express and Scale

Node.js interviews test how the event loop and non-blocking I/O work, streams and buffers, Express middleware and error handling, scaling with clustering or worker threads, and securing APIs. Expect to design or debug a small REST endpoint.

Sample answers

Talk about what blocks the event loop.

Most Node.js follow-ups come back to concurrency and failure handling.

Model answers for 4 Node.js questions

Typical round: runtime concepts, API design, a debugging scenario

Q: Node.js is single-threaded. How does it handle many requests? A: JavaScript runs on one thread, but I/O like network and disk is handed to the OS or libuv's thread pool. While that work happens, the event loop keeps serving other requests and runs callbacks when results return. CPU-heavy work blocks everyone, so it goes to worker threads or a separate service.

Q: How does Express middleware work? A: Middleware are functions (req, res, next) run in order. Each can modify the request, end the response, or call next() to pass control. Error-handling middleware has four arguments and is registered last.

Q: When would you use streams? A: For large data such as file uploads, CSV exports or proxying, so you process chunks instead of loading everything into memory. pipe() or pipeline() also handles backpressure.

Q: How do you handle errors in async code? A: Use try/catch with async/await and a central error middleware, reject with Error objects, never leave promises unhandled, log with context, and return safe messages to clients.

What interviewers check

Built for scanners, humans and hiring intent.

  • Event loop understanding

Phases, microtasks and what blocks the loop explain most Node.js performance questions.

  • API design

Routing, validation, middleware and error handling show you can build maintainable services.

  • Scaling

Clustering, worker threads, caching and horizontal scaling come up for experienced roles.

  • Security

Input validation, auth, rate limiting and secret handling are expected in backend interviews.

Examples

Copy the structure, not the wording.

These examples show shape and specificity. Add your own facts, metrics, tools and outcomes.

Runtime concepts

  • What is libuv?
  • process.nextTick vs setImmediate?
  • What is a Buffer?
  • CommonJS vs ES modules?
  • What is package-lock.json for?

API and Express

  • How do you structure an Express app?
  • How do you validate request bodies?
  • JWT vs session authentication?
  • How do you add rate limiting?
  • How do you version an API?

Scenario questions

  • An endpoint gets slower under load. How do you investigate?
  • Memory keeps growing. How do you find the leak?
  • A CPU-heavy report blocks other requests. What do you change?
  • A third-party API is flaky. How do you protect your service?
  • How do you deploy with zero downtime?

Actionable tips

Small edits that lift response rates.

Run through these before every application.

  1. 1Explain the event loop simplyDraw the call stack, queues and libuv. Clarity here earns trust for the rest of the round.
  2. 2Show error-handling disciplineCentral error middleware and no unhandled rejections signal production experience.
  3. 3Mention TypeScript and testingTyped services and Jest or Supertest tests are expected on modern Node teams.
  4. 4Bring a scaling storyCaching, queueing or clustering you added, with before-and-after numbers.

FAQ

Common questions, direct answers.

What is Node.js?

Node.js is a JavaScript runtime built on Chrome's V8 engine that runs JavaScript on servers, using an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model.

Is Node.js single-threaded?

JavaScript execution runs on one main thread, but Node uses libuv's thread pool and the OS for I/O, and worker threads can run CPU-heavy JavaScript in parallel.

What is the event loop in Node.js?

The loop that processes callbacks in phases such as timers, I/O callbacks and check, running microtasks like resolved promises between them.

What is the difference between process.nextTick and setImmediate?

process.nextTick callbacks run immediately after the current operation, before other queued work. setImmediate runs in the check phase of the next loop iteration.

What are streams in Node.js?

Streams process data in chunks. Types are readable, writable, duplex and transform. They reduce memory use and support backpressure for large data.

What is middleware in Express?

Functions with access to req, res and next that run in sequence to handle logging, parsing, auth, validation or errors before or after route handlers.

How do you handle errors in Express?

Wrap async handlers to forward errors with next(err), and register an error-handling middleware with four arguments that logs and returns a safe response.

What is clustering in Node.js?

Running multiple Node processes, often one per CPU core, sharing a port so the app uses all cores. Process managers like PM2 can handle this.

What are worker threads?

A module for running JavaScript in parallel threads, useful for CPU-intensive tasks that would otherwise block the event loop.

CommonJS vs ES modules?

CommonJS uses require and module.exports and loads synchronously. ES modules use import and export, support static analysis and are the modern standard.

How do you secure a Node.js API?

Validate input, use parameterised queries, hash passwords, use HTTPS, set security headers, rate-limit, keep dependencies updated and store secrets outside code.

What is JWT authentication?

A signed token holding user claims that the client sends with each request. The server verifies the signature instead of storing session state.

How do you find a memory leak in Node.js?

Watch heap usage over time, take heap snapshots with Chrome DevTools or clinic.js, compare them, and look for growing caches, listeners or closures.

What is package.json used for?

It describes the project, its scripts and dependency ranges. package-lock.json pins exact versions for reproducible installs.

How should I prepare for a Node.js interview?

Revise the event loop, async patterns and Express, build a small API with auth, validation and tests, and prepare one scaling or debugging story.
