RAG Interview Questions: From Chunking to Evaluation

RAG interviews walk the pipeline: how you chunk and embed documents, store and retrieve them (vector, keyword or hybrid search), re-rank results, build the prompt, and measure retrieval and answer quality. Most also ask how you'd debug a wrong answer.

Sample answers

Diagnose retrieval before blaming the model.

Good RAG answers separate retrieval problems from generation problems.

Model answers for 4 RAG questions

Typical round: pipeline design, failure debugging, metrics

Q: A RAG bot gives a wrong answer. How do you debug it? A: First check retrieval: was the right passage in the top results? If not, look at chunking, the embedding model, filters or the need for keyword search. If it was retrieved, check the prompt, context order and length, and whether the model was told to answer only from sources.

Q: How do you choose chunk size? A: Match it to how questions are answered in your documents. Small chunks are precise but lose context; large chunks keep context but dilute relevance and cost tokens. Start around a few hundred tokens with some overlap, split on headings, and tune using a retrieval test set.

Q: Why use hybrid search? A: Vector search finds similar meaning but can miss exact terms like product codes or names; keyword search such as BM25 catches those. Combining them, then re-ranking, usually improves recall and precision.

Q: How do you evaluate a RAG system? A: Separately: retrieval with recall@k or hit rate on labelled question-passage pairs, and generation with faithfulness to sources and answer correctness, using human or LLM grading on a fixed test set.

What interviewers check

Built for scanners, humans and hiring intent.

  • Pipeline thinking

Ingestion, chunking, embedding, indexing, retrieval, re-ranking and generation as distinct, tunable stages.

  • Retrieval quality

Hybrid search, metadata filters and re-rankers show you've moved beyond a basic demo.

  • Measured results

Recall@k, faithfulness and answer accuracy on a test set prove the system works.

  • Grounded answers

Citations, abstaining when context is missing, and access control on documents.

Pipeline basics

  • What is RAG and why use it?
  • What are embeddings?
  • What is a vector database?
  • What is cosine similarity?
  • What is chunk overlap?

Retrieval quality

  • What is hybrid search?
  • What does a re-ranker do?
  • How do metadata filters help?
  • What is query rewriting?
  • How do you handle tables and PDFs?

Debugging scenarios

  • The answer ignores the retrieved document. Why?
  • Retrieval misses product codes. What do you change?
  • Answers are slow. Where do you cut latency?
  • Users see documents they shouldn't. How do you fix it?
  • Quality dropped after re-indexing. What do you check?

Actionable tips

Small edits that lift response rates.

Run through these before every application.

  1. 1Split the problem in twoAlways say whether a failure is retrieval or generation, and how you'd tell.
  2. 2Quote a metricMention recall@k or hit rate for retrieval and faithfulness for answers.
  3. 3Mention access controlFiltering retrieved documents by user permission is a common senior-level follow-up.
  4. 4Know when not to use RAGFor stable behaviour or format changes, fine-tuning or better prompting may be the better answer.
  5. 5Practise system design aloudBrainUp AI Interview Prep helps you rehearse explaining pipelines clearly.

FAQ

Common questions, direct answers.

What is retrieval-augmented generation?

RAG retrieves relevant documents for a query and adds them to the LLM's prompt so it answers from current or private data, ideally with citations.

Why use RAG instead of fine-tuning?

RAG handles knowledge that changes often, supports citations and keeps data access controllable. Fine-tuning is better for changing behaviour, tone or output format.

What are embeddings in RAG?

Embeddings are vectors that represent the meaning of text. Queries and chunks are embedded so similar meanings can be found by vector similarity.

What is a vector database?

A database optimised to store embeddings and run fast approximate nearest-neighbour search, often with metadata filtering. Examples include pgvector, Pinecone, Weaviate and Milvus.

What is chunking?

Chunking splits documents into smaller passages for embedding and retrieval. Chunk size, overlap and splitting on structure such as headings strongly affect quality.

What is hybrid search?

Hybrid search combines vector similarity with keyword search like BM25, improving recall for both meaning-based and exact-term queries.

What is re-ranking?

Re-ranking reorders initially retrieved passages with a more accurate model, such as a cross-encoder, so the best context reaches the LLM.

What is query rewriting?

Query rewriting reformulates a user's question, for example expanding it or making it standalone from chat history, to retrieve better passages.

How do you evaluate retrieval?

Use a labelled set of questions with known relevant passages and measure recall@k, hit rate or MRR.

How do you evaluate generated answers?

Score faithfulness to retrieved sources, correctness and completeness using human review or an LLM grader against a fixed test set.

How do you reduce hallucinations in RAG?

Improve retrieval, instruct the model to answer only from context and cite it, allow 'I don't know', and verify citations automatically.

How do you handle access control in RAG?

Store permissions as metadata and filter retrieval by the user's access before results reach the prompt.

How do you reduce RAG latency?

Cache frequent queries and embeddings, retrieve fewer but better chunks, use faster re-rankers or skip them for easy queries, and stream the response.

What is GraphRAG?

GraphRAG builds a knowledge graph of entities and relationships from documents and uses it for retrieval, helping with questions that span many documents.

How should I prepare for a RAG interview?

Build a small RAG app over real documents, add a retrieval test set and metrics, try hybrid search and re-ranking, and be ready to explain what improved quality.
