Spring Boot Interview Questions: From Beans to Microservices

Spring Boot interviews test auto-configuration and starters, bean lifecycle and dependency injection, REST controllers, Spring Data JPA and transactions, exception handling, security basics, configuration profiles, and microservice patterns for experienced roles.

Sample answers

Explain the magic behind the annotations.

Interviewers want to know what Spring does for you, and what goes wrong when it can't.

Model answers for 4 Spring Boot questions

Typical round: Spring core, JPA, a microservice scenario

Q: How does auto-configuration work? A: @SpringBootApplication enables auto-configuration, which loads configuration classes listed by the starters on the classpath. Each uses conditions like @ConditionalOnClass and @ConditionalOnMissingBean, so it configures defaults only when you haven't defined your own bean.

Q: Why might @Transactional not work? A: Spring applies it through a proxy, so it is ignored on private methods and on self-invocation from another method in the same class. By default it also rolls back only for unchecked exceptions unless rollbackFor is set.

Q: What is the N+1 problem in JPA? A: Loading a list of parents and then lazily loading each child collection triggers one query plus N more. Fix it with a JOIN FETCH query, an entity graph, or batch fetching.

Q: How do you handle exceptions in a REST API? A: Throw meaningful custom exceptions and map them in a @RestControllerAdvice with @ExceptionHandler methods that return consistent error bodies and correct HTTP status codes.

What interviewers check

Built for scanners, humans and hiring intent.

  • Spring core

IoC, dependency injection, bean scopes and lifecycle are the foundation of every Spring question.

  • Data access

JPA mappings, fetch types, transactions and the N+1 problem come up in most backend rounds.

  • Production concerns

Security, validation, profiles, actuator and logging show you have run Spring apps in production.

  • Microservices

Service discovery, config, resilience and inter-service calls matter for experienced roles.

Examples

These examples show shape and specificity. Add your own facts, metrics, tools and outcomes.

  • What are starters?
  • @Component vs @Service vs @Repository?
  • Constructor vs field injection?
  • What are bean scopes?

Data and REST

  • What is Spring Data JPA?
  • Lazy vs eager fetching?
  • What does @Transactional propagation mean?
  • How do you validate request bodies?
  • How do you paginate results?

Microservice scenarios

  • One service is slow and others time out. What do you do?
  • How do you call another service reliably?
  • How do you manage config across environments?
  • How do you secure endpoints with JWT?
  • How do you monitor a Spring Boot app in production?

Actionable tips

Small edits that lift response rates.

Run through these before every application.

  1. 1Prefer constructor injectionExplain why: immutability, easier testing and clear required dependencies.
  2. 2Know the proxy pitfallsTransactional and caching behaviour on self-invocation is a classic senior question.
  3. 3Practise JPA queriesWrite a JOIN FETCH and a pageable repository method from memory.
  4. 4Bring a microservice storyTimeouts, retries or circuit breakers you added, with the problem they solved.

FAQ

Common questions, direct answers.

What is Spring Boot?

Spring Boot is a framework on top of Spring that provides auto-configuration, starter dependencies and an embedded server so you can build production-ready apps with minimal setup.

What is the difference between Spring and Spring Boot?

Spring is the core framework for dependency injection and more. Spring Boot adds opinionated defaults, auto-configuration, starters and embedded servers to reduce configuration.

What does @SpringBootApplication do?

It combines @Configuration, @EnableAutoConfiguration and @ComponentScan, marking the main class and enabling auto-configuration and component scanning.

What are Spring Boot starters?

Dependency bundles like spring-boot-starter-web or spring-boot-starter-data-jpa that bring in compatible libraries for a feature in one dependency.

What is dependency injection?

A pattern where the framework creates objects and supplies their dependencies, instead of classes creating them, improving testability and loose coupling.

What are bean scopes in Spring?

Singleton (default, one per container), prototype (new each time), and web scopes like request and session.

What is the difference between @Component, @Service and @Repository?

All register beans. @Service marks business logic and @Repository marks data access, also translating persistence exceptions. @Component is the generic form.

What is Spring Data JPA?

A module that generates repository implementations from interfaces, supporting derived queries, JPQL, pagination and sorting on top of JPA and Hibernate.

What does @Transactional do?

It runs a method inside a transaction, committing on success and rolling back on runtime exceptions by default, applied through a Spring proxy.

What is the N+1 query problem?

One query loads parent entities and then one extra query runs per parent for its children. JOIN FETCH, entity graphs or batch fetching solve it.

How do you handle exceptions globally?

Use @RestControllerAdvice with @ExceptionHandler methods to map exceptions to consistent error responses and status codes.

What are Spring profiles?

Profiles group configuration for environments such as dev, test and prod, activated with spring.profiles.active.

What is Spring Boot Actuator?

A module exposing production endpoints like health, metrics and info for monitoring and management.

How do microservices communicate in Spring?

Synchronously via REST with RestClient, WebClient or Feign, or asynchronously via message brokers like Kafka or RabbitMQ, with resilience patterns like retries and circuit breakers.

How should I prepare for a Spring Boot interview?

Revise Spring core and JPA, build a REST service with validation, exception handling, security and tests, and prepare one production issue you solved.
