Germany job CV guide

Germany CV Format: A Clean, Factual Lebenslauf

A German CV (Lebenslauf) is usually 2 pages, reverse-chronological and tabular, with exact month/year dates, no unexplained gaps, language levels on the CEFR scale (A1-C2), and contact details. A professional photo is still common but optional, and the CV is often signed and dated at the end.

German CV layout

Section order German recruiters expect.

German employers value completeness, exact dates and a tidy, factual layout.

Germany CV format: sections

A4 | 2 pages | Tabular, reverse-chronological | PDF, often combined with cover letter and certificates

Personal details: Name, address or current city, phone, email, LinkedIn. Nationality and visa status (for example EU Blue Card eligible) are common for non-EU applicants. A professional photo is optional.

Profile (optional): 2-3 lines with your field, years of experience and core strengths.

Work experience: MM/YYYY - MM/YYYY on the left, title, company, city and 3-5 factual bullets on the right. Explain gaps briefly, such as 'MM/YYYY - MM/YYYY: Master's preparation and German course'.

Education: Degree, university, city, dates and final grade. Mention anabin or ZAB recognition if you have it.

Languages: English C1, German B1 (Goethe-Zertifikat), Hindi native, using CEFR levels.

IT skills and certifications: Tools and certifications relevant to the job.

Place, date and signature (optional): For example 'Pune, 27.10.2026' followed by your name.

What German employers expect

Built for scanners, humans and hiring intent.

  • Exact dates, no gaps

German recruiters expect month/year dates and short explanations for any gaps.

  • Language levels

CEFR levels for German and English are often the first filter for non-German speakers.

  • Recognised qualifications

Degree recognition (anabin, ZAB) and grades matter more in Germany than in many countries.

  • Factual and tidy

A clean tabular layout without exaggeration fits German hiring culture.

Examples

Copy the structure, not the wording.

These examples show shape and specificity. Add your own facts, metrics, tools and outcomes.

Include

  • Month/year dates for every entry
  • CEFR language levels with certificates
  • Visa or Blue Card eligibility for non-EU applicants
  • Final grades and degree recognition
  • Short explanations for gaps

Leave out

  • Religion, caste and father's name
  • Marital status and date of birth (optional, often omitted now)
  • Salary history
  • Hobbies that add nothing to the application
  • Vague claims without facts

Indian-to-German changes

  • Swap Indian CGPA for the grade plus the scale, for example 8.2/10
  • Replace 'fresher' with 'graduate' or 'Berufseinsteiger'
  • Remove the 'Declaration' paragraph
  • Use A4 and a 2-page limit
  • Add a separate cover letter (Anschreiben)
